Product Information

Compact and reliable
The LIFEBRIDGE® is highly compact, with an overall size of 24.0 x 17.7 x 14.6 inches (B x H x L) and weighing 38.6 pounds. Thanks to a unique level of automation, it is ready for operation in no more than 5 – 10 minutes. An integrated display guides trained users through the menu intuitively in only 5 steps. Owing to this simple and safe handling the LIFEBRIDGE® can be connected to the patient by trained medical staff using one venous and one arterial femoral cannula without the need for a perfusionist. At this place, it can achieve a blood flow of up to 6 l/min.

Reliable protection against air embolisms
LIFEBRIDGE®’s patented 7 stage safety system protects reliably against air embolisms by completely eliminating air bubbles, again, fully automatically. Replaceable “patient modules” – including encapsulated components that come into blood contact directly – are disposed of by the hospital after use. In stationery use, the system operates with 110/220 VAC mains power. In mobile 24 V battery operation, it will run for up to 2 ½ hours under average load.

Modular concept
The LIFEBRIDGE®’s modular design facilitates its handling before, during, and after its service. Each basic unit (beige) comprises at least one red control module and one grey patient module. After each use, the patient module is detached and discarded (see drawing) an the control module is shipped to LIFEBRIDGE Medizintechnik for refurbishing.

Menu driven start-up
The display guides the user through the LIFEBRIDGE®’s start-up in five steps. This guarantees safe operations even in time-critical emergencies. A rotary knob and a touch screen are used to select the clearly structured menu’s options.

Product approvals

30th December 2007 – CE certification
The LIFEBRIDGE® is the world’s first CE certified emergency cardiopulmonary support system. To achieve this, the complex safety-related requirements for the system were identified in close coordination with Munich based TÜV Süd Product Services, one of the leading certification organisations in this special field of medical technology, and were then successfully implemented within the LIFEBRIDGE® product development.

17th October 2009 – FDA clearance
LIFEBRIDGE Medizintechnik has been awarded clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for a portable heart-lung machine, a first for any manufacturer worldwide. Since its launch in early 2008, more than 40 hospitals have adopted the LIFEBRIDGE® in Germany alone. After its successful FDA clearance it is also gaining ground in the U.S.
